Austria Info

Finding a nice place to live is always difficult. Austria is no exception - getting the right accommodation can be hard, especially in the larger cities.

The rental market is well developed in Austria; you will find a broad range of offers from very old buildings with a lot of ‘character’ up to brand-new, very comfortable flats. First, try to get a feeling for where you would like to live. City centres are crowded and expensive. Outside the centres, housing is cheaper; you are closer to nature and may still be able to reach the city in a short time by using public transport. Apartment prices vary greatly depending on the area in the respective city. For example, in the outer districts of Vienna you will easily spot the difference (are there only luxury cars parked on the streets?) and be able to guess the appropriate price range. Walk around and try to get an impression of what the area is like. Then check the public transport (Metro, Bus, Train) and how long it will take you to reach your workplace, university or points of interest.

Many students live in shared apartments. There tends to be a relatively higher turnover of free rooms, so there is a fair chance you find a room in a shared apartment quickly.
Austria has a relatively expensive cost of living. It is cheaper than Switzerland or Nordic countries, but more expensive than Spain or Italy. In the countryside everything is cheaper, but it is more likely you will live and work in Vienna or one of the other larger cities. As a single person you should calculate around €1400 as a monthly budget to have a comfortable life. Apartment prices start at around €400 per month for rent, excluding utilities.

Explore Vienna

The capital of Austria, Vienna is a city of contrasts – wonderfully historic, yet increasingly cosmopolitan. Tourists should start in the city centre, a member of the UNESCO World Heritage List and often described as an open-air museum. Here you’ll see St Stephen’s Cathedral, where a climb to to take in the incredible views from the tower-keeper’s room is a must. Next make your way to Schönbrunn Palace, where you might also like to visit the animals in Tiergarten Schönbrunn (Vienna Zoo). For more contemporary attractions, the Museumsquartier (or MQ) is a hotbed of incredible modern art. When hunger strikes, you can’t go past a classic wiener schnitzel and side of erdapfel salat (potato salad), followed by a steaming bowl of apfelstrudel (apple strufel) or a slice of sachertorte. If you choose self-catering Vienna accommodation, you can also make the most of the city’s fabulous farmers’ markets. One of Vienna’s most famous and most popular food markets is Naschmarkt, home to a range of stalls selling foodie delights from fruit and vegetables to pickles, cheeses, breads and meats.

When to go to Vienna

Vienna is an exceptional city for tourists to visit at any time of year. Winters are cold, but unbeatable for their atmosphere and incredible Christmas markets, along with stalls selling mulled wine and roasted chestnuts scattered throughout the city. By March, the weather is warming up, with temperatures hitting a peak in July and August. Autumn, meanwhile, sees the return of Viennese cultural icons, from horses and choristers to opera.

Getting to and around Vienna
